SNC-LAVALIN SELECTED BY NEPCO’S FORMER MANAGEMENT AND CLIENTS TO COMPLETE POWER PROJECTS – EXPANDING

Seattle | May 17, 2002

SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. announced today that its subsidiary, SNC-Lavalin Constructors Inc., has been awarded contracts to complete construction on eight gas-fired thermal power plants in the United States.

To date, work on the plants has been carried out by National Energy Production Corporation (NEPCO) of Bothell, Washington, a subsidiary of Enron. The total value of the contracts for SNC-Lavalin Constructors is approximately US $900 million.  Once completed, the power plants will have a combined installed capacity of 8,700 megawatts (MW) of power.

“We are very pleased we were selected to complete these substantial projects,” said Klaus Triendl, SNC-Lavalin’s Executive Vice-President, Power. “Our  internationally acknowledged expertise in engineering, construction and project management, and our solid financial position emerged as key factors for NEPCO’s former management and its clients in their decision to select us for these contracts.”

SNC-Lavalin Constructors has hired approximately 5,100 NEPCO employees, including the former management team, all of whom bring valuable experience and expertise to SNC-Lavalin’s thermal power group.  The new company will be located in Bothell, Washington, and headed up by John H. Gillis, the former President of NEPCO.

“It has always been part of our strategic plan to strengthen our presence in the thermal power sector, and these agreements provide us with the opportunity to meet that goal,” said Jacques Lamarre, President and Chief Executive Officer, SNC-Lavalin.

SNC-Lavalin Constructors’ new employees draw from many years of experience in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of high efficiency, combustion turbine, simple and combined cycle cogeneration plants, as well as conventional and waste fuelled power generating facilities. Collectively, they have worked on over 80 projects in North America, and in certain international markets, representing nearly 20,000 MW of power.

“SNC-Lavalin is internationally recognized as a world leader in hydroelectric and nuclear power generation and power transmission,” said Mr. Lamarre. “The former NEPCO team’s know-how and experience, combined with SNC-Lavalin’s existing thermal power expertise and extensive international network now position us as a leader in the thermal power sector, both in North America and around the world,” he said.

SNC-Lavalin (TSX:  SNC) is one of the leading groups of engineering and construction companies in the world and a global leader in the ownership and management of infrastructure.  The SNC-Lavalin companies employ over 14,000 people in offices across Canada and in 30 other countries around the world and are currently working in some 100 countries.
