SNC-Lavalin Nuclear Inc. has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction contract to replace the steam generators at Units 1 and 2 of Bruce Power’s Bruce A nuclear power station.

The contract is part of an extensive restart and refurbishment project as part of an agreement between Bruce Power A.L.P. and the Ontario Power Authority.

The Bruce Power plant is located near Kincardine on Lake Huron, approximately 250 kilometres northwest of Toronto.  The project involves replacing eight steam generators that are nearing the end of their safe and reliable service lives.  The generators transfer heat from the reactor to boil water which generates steam and supplies the turbine generator with the energy to produce electricity.

“We are pleased to be working with our client, Bruce Power, and are dedicated to making this project a great success, as it will be the first time a steam generator replacement has been carried out on a CANDU reactor,” said Patrick Lamarre, President, SNC-Lavalin Nuclear Inc.  “The procedure is not new; several steam generator replacement projects have been carried out on other kinds of reactors safely and effectively in North America and overseas.”

The removal of the generators will be segregated from the ongoing operations at Units 3 and 4.  The pipes will be cut to separate the generators from the steam drum and the generators will be sealed so they will be self contained units when removed.  Work is now underway, with an expected completion date of June 2008.

“Nuclear energy is a safe and efficient complement to other forms of power generation, which are increasingly insufficient to generate the amount of power consumed in Ontario and elsewhere,” said Klaus Triendl, Executive Vice-President, SNC-Lavalin Group Inc.  “We look forward to carrying out more projects of this kind in the years to come, both domestically and internationally.”
