SNC-Lavalin has been a global leader in the aluminum sector for over 25 years. Many of our feasibility studies for leading primary aluminum producers, including Alcan, Alcoa, BHP Billiton, Hydro Aluminium and Aluminium Pechiney, have led to our involvement in the construction or expansion of world-class smelters. Among these are the Alusaf Hillside Aluminum Smelter in South Africa, the largest ever built as a single stage greenfield project, and Mozal I, a greenfield smelter in Mozambique, which garnered a “Project of the Year Award” from the Project Management Institute (PMI).
SNC-Lavalin is also active in alumina refining on a global scale, from the Aughinish Greenfield refinery in Ireland, to many brownfield refinery projects around the world.
Process Technologies
Our work on bauxite and alumina includes mine deposit evaluation, mine development, bulk material transportation systems, alumina refineries and red mud disposal facilities. Our process engineers are involved in upgrading and debottlenecking alumina refineries in Canada, the USA, Brazil, Jamaica and many other countries.
We are experienced in large-scale plant upgrades, brownfield expansions, greenfield alumina refinery projects and all unit processes required for a typical Bayer process alumina plant.

Alouette Aluminum Project
In 2005, Phase II of the Alouette Aluminum Smelter Project called for an increase in the facility's primary aluminum capacity of 305,000 tpa. As joint venture leader, we provided engineering, procurement and construction management services.The project, completed within budget and three months ahead of schedule, had an exceptional health and safety record. Today, it is the largest aluminum smelter in the Americas and the fifth largest in the world.Services: EPCM

Alumar Alumina Project
Our mandate is to expand the Alumar alumina refinery in Brazil to increase its production capacity from 2.1 Mtpa to a 3.5 Mtpa. The project includes the addition of lime slurry facilities, bauxite stockpiling/reclaiming facilities, two milling trains, a new digestion unit, retrofit to an existing digestion unit, clarification facilities, precipitation facilities, three new calciner units, cogeneration facilities, an alumina silo and ship loader at the port, and other related infrastructure.Services: EPCM

Alusaf Aluminum Project
An SNC-Lavalin-led joint venture was contracted to provide EPCM services for a 466,000 tpy greenfield aluminum smelter, the largest ever built in one step. When the project was finished five months ahead of schedule and 15% under budget, the joint venture was awarded a second contract to add a half-potline, increasing the capacity by 125,000 tpa.Services: EPCM

Mozal Aluminum Project
The 250,000 tpa Mozal aluminum smelter, completed in 2000, is the largest private sector investment in Mozambique. The project employed a work force that peaked at 9,000.The Mozal project was an outstanding success. It was completed 6 months ahead of schedule and US $100 million under budget, and had an excellent safety record. SNC-Lavalin and its Engineering Management Services (EMS) partner were also awarded the Project Management Institute's 2001 Project of the Year award for their work on the Mozal Aluminum Smelter.Services: EPCM

Dubal Aluminum Smelter Expension
The Dubai Aluminum Company (DUBAL) has awarded us several contracts over the years.Recently, we came in under budget on work that increased its Dubai smelter's capacity by almost 74,000 tonnes/year. DUBAL has now awarded us another contract to expand the smelter by a further 100,000 tonnes/year which will require adding another 164 pots to lines 7a and 9 and upgrading the rodding shop.
