Environmental Risk Management

The process of risk identification, assessment and mitigation are essential components of any successful project. This involves thoughtful and thorough consideration of project needs, engineering feasibility, protection of human and ecological health. socio-economic implications and environmental sustainability.  Our extensive multidisciplinary team and extensive experience allow us to bring the best possible solutions to all types of projects anywhere in the world.

Risk Assessment and Management of Contaminated Sites

SLE routinely evaluates the environmental effects and associated risks from a wide range of industrial, commercial and everyday activities. These activities may expose human, aquatic and terrestrial receptors to contaminants through direct contact, ingestion, inhalation or other pathways. Actual and acceptable risks are assessed and necessary measures are designed to eliminate or manage these risks. This process also provides site specific property criteria to guide in the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated sites.

Human Health Risk Assessment of Dental Amalgam

Dental amalgam is widely used to fill dental cavities and consists of about 50% mercury by weight. There is considerable public and regulatory debate about the potential health risks from inhaling mercury as it volatilizes from fillings, including the banning of amalgam use in Sweden and Norway. SLE conducted a population-based human health risk assessment of mercury exposure from dental amalgam for evaluation and use by the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA).  The results formed the centrepiece of the December 2010 US FDA Expert Panel Review of amalgam safety.
