Turnkey EPC contract for a major construction village
We delivered a turnkey EPC contract for a 2,200 person temporary construction village to support the development of a major LNG project at Hides in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The project has a capacity of a nominal 6.9 million tonnes per year. Our role included engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the security and administration building, package substations, ablution blocks, accommodation building, recreation building, waste management, waste water treatment plant and a raw water treatment plant.
Supporting local people
Located in the remote Southern Highlands of PNG, this project was undertaken in an area known for tension between local tribes and demonstrated our ability to establish pioneer facilities in remote locations. Through a partnership with a local labour company, we employed around 130 personnel from local communities, providing them with onsite technical and safety training, many of which became safety champions and promoted our safety culture among their workmates. The effectiveness of our training is evidenced by the many PNG nationals who have since been offered roles at the plant, post commissioning.
Complex logistics, challenging conditions
Having identified the 900km route to the site as a key challenge, we proposed a flatpack modular accommodation system. Fabricated in the UAE and shipped to Lae, the port of entry, the flatpack solution minimised the number of journeys, enabled faster delivery and achieved savings in transport costs.
The project has generated benefits for PNG on several levels. Telecoms and commercial infrastructure at Hides have improved significantly, while the training of local people has introduced new skills into the community. The client has also decided to use part of the camp for operations staff instead of building separate accommodation.
