Ichthys Project Onshore Liquefied Natural Gas Facilities

We continue to provide onshore services and expertise to one of the world’s most significant oil and gas projects, while helping to build local capacity.

Since 2012, we have been involved with four contracts, including two in 2014, to support the delivery of the Ichthys LNG Project’s onshore processing facilities. These contracts were won as Kentz Pty Ltd, which is now integrated into SNC-Lavalin. We’ve been recognized for excellent safety performance by lead onshore contractor, JKC Australia LNG (JKC). We’re also helping train local workers and strengthen local businesses.

A massive oil and gas project

The Ichthys LNG Project is located approximately 220 kilometres off Australia’s northwest coast. It consists of three mega-projects rolled into one: some of the industry’s largest offshore facilities and a state-of-the-art onshore processing facility joined by an 890-kilometre subsea pipeline.

The INPEX-led Ichthys LNG Project will have the capacity to produce up to approximately 8.9 million tonnes of LNG and approximately 1.6 million tonnes of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) annually. At peak, it will also yield some 100,000 barrels of condensate per day.

Four contracts in three years on the Ichthys Project Onshore LNG Facilities

In 2012, we were awarded the temporary facilities’ telecommunication system and site-wide fibre network by lead onshore contractor, JKC. This was successfully delivered in May 2014, establishing our presence on site at Bladin Point, near Darwin.

The following year we were awarded the underground electrical and instrumentation package for the onshore LNG facilities by Leighton Contractors, a JKC subcontractor, with the final cable pulled in November 2015.

In early 2014, the UGL Kentz Joint Venture was awarded the structural, mechanical and piping (SMP) construction package for the onshore facilities and gas processing plant by lead onshore contractor, JKC. We were also selected to deliver the overall electrical and instrumentation (E&I) construction package for the two process trains and utilities in April 2014. Combined, both these two packages are estimated to have created more than 7,000 jobs.

Health, Safety & Environment:

Since 2012, we have executed over 16 million hours across four contracts for the Ichthys Project Onshore LNG Facilities, receiving awards from lead onshore contractor JKC in recognition of our dedication and commitment to health, safety and environment. This includes HSE Excellence Awards, Gold Standard Subcontractor of the Year Award, Gold Standard Subcontractor of the Month Awards, World Safety Day ‘Take the Lead’ Champions, SafeMates Subcontractor of the Month Awards and Emerald Standard Award to name a few. This level of recognition is testament to our core value of safety and drive to achieve our vision of a workplace where no-one gets hurt and everyone goes home safe and well.

We strive to promote a positive safety culture and manage critical risk through effective leadership, workforce engagement, collaboration across the different packages and implementation of our HSSE management system and supporting programs.

The project teams ensured continuous improvement was at the forefront of everyone’s mind by driving leading performance indicators, promoting innovation, maintaining high standards of site safety compliance and implementing many successful HSSE awareness campaigns and initiatives.

Local training and investment

We are committed to upskilling and training local Darwin residents. At peak, approximately 8.2% of our total workforce on the Ichthys Project Onshore LNG Facilities were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) employees. We exceeded our ATSI employment targets on four packages of work. In addition to our ATSI commitment and as a part of our ongoing initiative to support apprenticeship programs in Australia, we host apprentices through client- and government-funded programs, as well as our own Electrical Trade Assistants program.
