Darlington Nuclear Generating Station

The Darlington nuclear generating station is Canada’s second largest nuclear facility by total energy output. Its four CANDU pressurized heavy water (PHWR) reactors are owned and operated by Ontario Power Generation (OPG). Capable of producing up to 31 million MWh annually, the Darlington station can power up to 2.5 million households.

In February, 2010, OPG announced plans to proceed with the detailed planning phase for the mid-life refurbishment of the Darlington station.

We’re refurbishing the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station to meet new nuclear safety regulations and provide crucial power to the residents of Ontario.

In 2012, Ontario Power Generation hired our joint venture with Aecon Industrial to replace the highly radioactive components that make up the CANDU reactor cores at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station (DNGS) near Toronto.

Once fully refurbished, the station will comply with new nuclear safety regulations and continue to produce approximately 20% of the province’s energy for at least another 30 years. This station is the largest clean energy project in Canada. Once fully refurbished, the station will comply with new nuclear safety regulations.

Careful project planning

We divided this large, complex project into two phases: definition (i.e., planning and simulation) and execution. The definition phase includes building a full-scale reactor mock-up to simulate key elements of the refurbishment, creating an employee training program, and developing, sourcing and testing specialized tooling. The execution phase will involve retubing all four reactor cores on a sequential basis using the tools and methods developed and tested during the definition phase.

Keeping everyone safe

By conducting extensive training and testing during the definition phase, we’re striving to minimize the risk associated with this highly sensitive work. Thanks to the mock-up, our project team will be able to determine the safest way of removing and replacing the fuel channels in Darlington’s four nuclear reactors. This preparatory work is essential to safeguard the health and safety of workers and neighbouring communities.
