We are currently in the final stages of our contract on the Medupi Power Station in Lephalale, South Africa with the main scope of work due to be completed in August 2017. We will continue to have a crew on-site until the end of 2018, to complete our cold commissioning activities. This project is of vital importance for South Africa, which has suffered years of electricity shortages, affecting the economy and the population in general.
The scope of work included the delivery of structural steel, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and piping of six Air Cooled Condenser (ACC) units at Medupi Power Station in Lephalale, South Africa. This involved the fabrication of the steel structure, exhaust and distribution ducting, piping and installation of all components, including all free-issued mechanical components from the client and pre-commissioning of the six air cooled condensers and associated equipment on the new Medupi Power Station for Eskom.
The Air Cooled Condenser (ACC) unit forms part of Alstom’s power island contract and is used to condense steam from the turbine exhaust. The demineralised water is returned for reuse in the turbine steam cycle.
Our Project Team
At peak, we employed about 1,500 employees, of which 60% were local labour from the Lephalale district, apart from very few expatriates, all our employees were South African. Throughout the life span of the project, we trained in excess of 600 local un-skilled employees, giving them the opportunity to apply for jobs within the industry after the completion of this project.
One of the contractual obligations was to spend 40% of our budget with companies owned by a previously disadvantaged person and this Black Empowerment initiative was successfully achieved.
In partnership with our Client (GEA) and our labour broker (Isizwe), we refurbished a local crèche for young disadvantaged children in the area. This was done by using the services of a small local building contractor. Additionally, smaller donations were made to various local orphanages.
SAISC Steel Awards 2015 - the 34th Event - The steel construction award for excellence in the use of structural steel
This project demonstrates our ability to successfully complete a contract of this magnitude in the power industry and our power team look forward to future opportunities with Alstom and GEA.
