Mission accomplished: heaviest lift in the history of the Mozambique mining sector goes off without a hitch

October 17, 2014 Mozambique , Africa

Following twelve months of planning, Kentz, a Member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, completed the heaviest lift in the history of the Mozambique mining sector for the Moatize Expansion: Nacala Port (MENP) project.

Kentz designed and built the critical erection trestle to support the 750 tonne-Liebherr crane that lifted a 250-tonne ‘wagon tippler’ into place. The tippler will off-load double-train wagons carrying 130 tonnes of coal with 65 tonnes, each in addition to off-loading, for Brazilian resource company Vale. Capable of handling 18 million tonnes of coal per year, the wagon tippler is singularly the most important mechanical installation for the company.
