Supporting communities we operate in is at the core of SNC-Lavalin’s global sustainability program. In this spirit, we are supporting a local community in Embalenhle, South Africa by bringing hygiene, kitchen facilities and recreational areas to a day care centre. The Lighthouse Day Care Centre is a non-profit organisation that provides free day care for children aged 2-6 years while their parents are at work.
As part of the initiative, we have donated two large containers, one was converted into a kitchen and the other was converted into a toilet facility. We also planted a vegetable garden for the children so they could see and get involved with how vegetables grow.
While helping the day care centre, we planned a variety of activities involving everyone. Roles and responsibilities were assigned in groups that included planting vegetables, creating a pathway with concrete tiles in the garden, creating a sandbox and painting a wall in the children’s play area.
