Modern technologies have allowed train control to move from trackside signals to in-cab displays authorizing the driver to proceed. Where required, the remaining functions of the driver can be mechanized, allowing the train to operate fully automatically. Our Rail Control Systems team has unparalleled experience of the Computer-Based Train Control Technologies (CBTC) driving this change on metro systems and the European Train Control System (ETCS) and Positive Train Control (PTC) being deployed on mainline infrastructure around the world.
Fitting these technologies is only part of the change required to deploy in-cab signaling; significant transformations in operations and maintenance practices are also needed. To gain the full capacity, reliability and financial benefits of the upgrade, infrastructure changes ranging from power supply and track upgrades to in-cab CCTV and Traffic Management Systems must be considered. If in-cab signaling is used to provide unattended and driverless operation, even more radical infrastructure changes may require, such as platforms screen doors and obstacle detection systems.
