Cerrejón Port Operations: Safe & Efficient

November 17, 2014 Latin America , Colombia

SNC-Lavalin employees are proud to build some of the world’s most remarkable projects—which improve people’s lives in substantial ways. Check out the new video we made for the Cerrejón Coal Mine Expansion. You won’t be disappointed.

Cerrejón Coal Mine

The Cerrejón Coal Mine expansion in northern Colombia is a mega-project by any standard of measurement. Already one of the world’s largest coal mines, our work will boost Cerrejón’s production capacity from 32 to 40 million tonnes per year.

To export all that coal, we needed to expand Cerrejón’s port complex at Puerto Bolivar. The facility's railway works were expanded, and the port facilities were upgraded to include a new 180,000-tonne berth facility, two 5,500-tonne ship loaders, and a new causeway to handle additional ship traffic. Cerrejón has not had an expansion of this magnitude since it began operations.

Our team is proud to have come up with cutting-edge solutions to generate significant cost savings for the client.
